Kilauea volcano, flowing into sea at sunrise.
I had a challenging and fun time shooting this volcano in Hawaii. I spent a night hiking around the lava fields, searching for my shot. As I hiked across Lava tubes, I looked down at the glowing, molten flow thinking to myself, “What am I doing? This is crazy!” It took four hours to get to where I wanted to shoot and I set up. Then it rained. It rained and rained. The sun sank below the horizon and it continued to rain – and no photograph. I started to hike back in the dark, pummeled by the wind and torrential rain, across the active lava field. The rain on the hot lava produced so much steam that I couldn’t even see my feet at times.
Arriving at the half way point, the rain eased. I sat down to dry myself off and became warmer from the heat of the lava. I photographed the surface lava for the next three hours. As morning neared, I headed towards the ocean to shoot the lava entering into sea at sunrise.
