Lighthouse

Monument

Victorian Coastline, Australia

Someone once said, ‘Lighthouses are a monument to the determination of man.’ Although I had researched lighthouse locations over a few months, this lighthouse was discovered by accident. It turned out to be the first sighting of Australia by Captain Cook of the Endeavour, named Hicks Point, after the first mate.

I returned to this location on two or three occasions, driving 500 miles (800km) return each time, attempting to capture this classically beautiful scene. From the campsite it was a two hour return hike. I made the hike a dozen times before this amazing color came. The sky turned this brilliant pink. The waves crashed over the rocks and a storm cloud moved in on the right; it was a very powerful experience. Occasionally when there are very high clouds and the sun is setting, for a very short time the clouds turn a brilliant pink.
